The Literature Of The Bible - 3 hrs.
The Literature of the Bible is an upper level class designed for undergraduate English majors, graduate students in English and other interested parties. In this class, we will study selected books of the Bible in terms of their formal qualities-- themes and motifs, poetic and narrative techniques, and genres. Also we will touch on various issues related to literary study of the Bible: the historical contexts in which Biblical texts were written, the way the texts of the Bible have been composed, compiled, edited, and translated over the years, and the influence of the Bible on literature and culture. Finally, we will occasionally explore non-formalist critical approaches to the BibleâÂÂi.e. psychoanalytic approaches to bible stories, feminism and womanism, ideological criticism, the Bible and popular culture, and other postmodern approaches.
