A three credit hour course designed to provide the student with knowledge of the production, transmission, and perception of acoustic signals in speech communication.

An introductory course in the study of American Sign Language (ASL) and Pidgin Sign English (PSE) with an emphasis on the Deaf Community and their culture. An understanding of some of the basic cultural differences of the Deaf and how they relate to the development and existence of sign languages will be coupled with basic skills in both ASL and PSE. Priciples of assessment including the instruments, procedures, and report writing skills utilized in diagnosing and reporting speech and language disorders. Prerequisites: SPLP 4001, 4028, 4033

A laboratory course to accompany SPLP 4001. This course will investigate correct sound formation and pronunciation related to phonetics and phonemic transcription. Practical activities will focus on mastery of the abilities to 1) perceive the distinctions between speech sounds and 2) accurately write these differences using IPA transcription and diacritics. Prerequisite(s): SPLP 1013, SPLP 1052, SPLP 2002, SPLP 2040. Progressed student in SPLP or consent of instructor and co-requisite enrollment in SPLP 4001.

Provides students with principles of managing communicatively disordered clients with supervised observation of diagnostic and therapy sessions. Prerequisites: SPLP 4001, 4028, 4033

A quantitative and qualitative study of research which prepares graduate students majoring in speech-language pathology to critically read, evaluate and generate research in speech-language pathology, including historical, descriptive and experimental processes, statistical and research designs, sampling procedures, collecting and processing research data, and disseminating research.

A study and comparison of contemporary theories of Distinctive Feature Analyses, Phonological Rule Systems, and Traditional Articulation Developments. Emphasis is on the theories as related to articulation remediation.

Intensive study of research related to theories of disfluent speech and current management of stuttering behaviors.

Intensive study of research literature in childhood language disorders. Emphasis is on student readings, discussions, analyses, and practical therapeutic application of current language theories.

Selected topics and evaluative instruments pertaining to the diagnosis of speech-language pathology.

An advanced study of voice disorders associated with organic laryngeal pathologies, neurologic, disease, and psychogenic disorders including their perceptual/instrumental identification and management.

The study of the neuropathologies and communication disorders associated with neurological impairments such as aphasia, apraxia, closed head injury, dysarthria, right hemisphere impairment, and degenerative diseases.

The study of evaluation and management strategies for neurological disorders such as aphasia, apraxia, closed head injury, dysarthria, right hemisphere impairment, and degenerative diseases. These disorders are introduced in Neurological Disorders I (SPLP 5050). Prerequisite: 5050.

Emphasis is upon research applications and clinical demonstrations of augmentative and alternative strategies and techniques for cerebral and neurological disorders as they affect speech production for speaking and non-speaking individuals.

Emphasis is upon evaluation/diagnosis and management of oropharyngeal dysphagia in pediatric to geriatric populations as well as research and clinical applications for cleft involved persons. (Formerly Seminar in Speech Habilitation for Persons with Cleft Palate.)

Education related to employment in different professional settings including ethics, policies, and procedural safeguards. Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor.

An introduction to audiological knowledge and skills pertinent to speech-language pathology including hearing screening, amplification, assistive listening devices, and assessment and management encompassing all age groups with varying types of degrees of hearing loss.
