SPED 2002 - Survey Of The Education Of Children With Special Needs - 3 hrs.
A survey of the cause, evaluation, education and prevention of children with special needs. (10 observation hours required)
SPED 4007 - Differentiated Instruction & Behavioral Support - 3 hrs.
This course focuses on differentiated instruction and behavioral support for students to meet the unique needs of diverse students and student with exceptionalities. Prerequisite(s): Must be admitted to Teacher Education and pass all applicable parts of PRAXIS.
SPED 4015 - Instructional Practices In Special Education - 3 hrs.
Course develops educator competencies for teaching academic/social skills to special students, and in developing tiered intervention plans for inclusive settings. Must be admitted to Teacher Education.
SPED 4020 - Assessment And Evaluation For Special Learners - 3 hrs.
Develops assessment skills for instructional planning to meet the educational needs of diverse learners with mild/moderate disabilities. Addresses formal and informal assessments. Must be admitted to Teacher Education.
SPED 4025 - Collaborative Teaming And Transition - 3 hrs.
Teaches secondary education majors to integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening strategies and activities into adolescent reading instruction. Must be admitted to Teacher Education.
SPED 5001 - Teaching Reading To Students With Special Needs - 3 hrs.
Designed to study students' special instructional needs in reading. The aspects of identification, diagnosis of reading needs, specialized methods of instruction, appropriate materials and modifications in reading are considered. Prerequisite: Valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from Certification Coordinator. (Same as READ 5001).
SPED 5002 - Assessment & Intervention For Special Learners - 3 hrs.
Diagnostic/prescriptive processes to meet educational needs of exceptional children. Formal testing, curriculum-based assessment and teaching, and translation of needs into educational programming. Prerequisite: 5061 or Approval of Department Head; valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from Certification Coordinator.
SPED 5004 - Assessment Strategies And Practicum: Early Intervention - 3 hrs.
Designed to introduce technique and literature pertinent to the developmental assessment of pre-school children with special needs. Emphasis will be placed upon the use of naturalistic observation, criterion curriculum and data from norm-referenced devices for the generation of program description (IEPs) for this population. Prerequisite: Valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from Certification Coordinator.
SPED 5005 - Methods Of Teaching Basic Subjects To Students With Mild / Moderate Disabilities - 3 hrs.
Designed to develop competencies of educators in teaching basic skills to special needs students as well as developing appropriate interventions plans. SPED 5006 - Vocational And Transition Services For Students With Disabilities - 3 hrs.
Designed to build competencies of educators in developing appropriate individual transition plans and facilitate transition of special needs students into the work force. SPED 5007 - Behavior Management & Classroom Organization For Individualized Needs Of Special Learners - 3 hrs.
This course focuses on methods and techniques for effective behavior management and classroom organization to meet the unique needs of students with exceptionalities.
SPED 5025 - Foundations Of Early Childhoon Special Education - 3 hrs.
An introduction to the history, trends and programs for the preschool child, ages birth through five, who is at-risk for or has an identified special need. Prerequisite: 2002 or equivalent. Valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from Certification Coordinator.
SPED 5026 - Methods And Practicum: Early Intervention - 3 hrs.
Techniques in organizing and teaching curriculum methods and instructional patterns effective in intervention and training for preschool children at-risk for learning difficulties. Prerequisite: Valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from Certification Coordinator.
SPED 5027 - Exceptional Family Systems And Community Resources - 3 hrs.
Exposes the learner to the array of variables which (1) effect family systems when a child with special needs is introduced into it and (2) promote an understanding, as a professional, of strategies and timing for effective introduction of resources and support to parents of children with special needs. Prerequisite: 5026 or equivalent.
SPED 5028 - Physical And Medical Management Of Preschool Children With Special Needs - 3 hrs.
Techniques in organizing and teaching materials, and procedures appropriate to understanding severe physical disability and low incidence exceptionalities and health impairments in preschool children. Prerequisite: 5026 or Permission of Instructor. Valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from Certification Coordinator.

SPED 5029 - Interagency And Interdisciplinary Teaming - 3 hrs.
Designed to provide information, skills, and strategies necessary for interventionists working in a collaborative/teaming service provision structure. Prerequisite: 5027 or Permission of Instructor. Analysis of the instructional needs of exceptional children and the application of instructional strategies and curricular modifications within regular classroom. This course is designed to develop competencies of educators in the fundamentals of Autism in order to facilitate social and academic needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
SPED 5071 - Advanced Diagnosis Of Exceptional Learners - 3 hrs.
Designed for advanced study of tests, techniques, and methods specific to diagnosis of learner peculiarities of exceptional children. Emphasis is placed on administration, interpretation and the formulation of appropriate education programs. An array of testing procedures will be addressed. Prerequisite: 5061 or Counseling 5062 or Psychology 4051. Valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from Certification Coordinator.

An examination of the theoretical and practical nature of creativity and techniques to develop and nurture creativity in the classroom. The course is designed for teachers of gifted children, general education teachers, counselors and/or administrators. SPED 5075 - Learning Characteristics Of Gifted Students - 3 hrs.
Designed to assist in the identification of the characteristics and motivational needs of the gifted learner. Prerequisite: Valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from Certification Coordinator.
SPED 5076 - Methods And Materials For Teaching Gifted And Talented - 3 hrs.
Designed to present methods of instruction, curriculum development and materials appropriate to the needs of gifted students in the regular and special class. Prerequisite: Valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from Certification Coordinator.
SPED 5077 - Gifted And Talented Practicum - 3 hrs.
A supervised experience with gifted children. Must meet all other eligibility requirements for Louisiana Teaching Certificate in field of study to earn graduate credit and grade. Prerequisites: 5075, 5076 and approval of Director of Field Experiences.
SPED 5078 - Social And Emotional Needs Of Gifted Learners - 3 hrs.
This course will examine the theoretical and instructional nature of students' affective needs. It is for education personnel responsible for gifted learners. Prerequisite: Valid Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent or written permission from Certification Coordinator.
